Witch Way to Candy Broom

Witch Way to Candy?

August 29, 2021

This cute little trick or treat broom will add a bit of whimsy to your autumn decor.  It is the perfect accompaniment to that big stash of Halloween treats.

What's needed:

*plunger

*2 rolls of mesh(one yellow & one brown)

*jute twine(orange & rust)

*trick or treat sign

*acrylic paint(white & brown)

*candy embellishment

*glue

*ribbon( your choice of colors)

*stick on letters

*mounting tape(optional, can use glue)

*sandpaper

Stain the wood handle with brown acrylic paint. I used a wet paper towel, but a baby wipe will work as well.

Pour a small amount of paint on the wet paper towel. (About size of a nickel)  Wipe paint on the handle.

You can also add a little black paint in the same way to give a darker look & bring out the wood grain.  I did not do this step, but I think it would look great.

Cut eight 9 inch pieces of each color mesh

Layer mesh slightly hanging over bottom edge of plunger.

Arrange each piece so the natural curve of the mesh is inward.

Secure mesh pieces with jute twine

Cut each piece of mesh in 4 strips.

I found it easier to turn the plunger upside down & allow the mesh to flip down. I held the handle between my knees. That worked well for me.

Cut close to where the mesh is secured, but NOT past the jute twine.

Let's make a bow.

Cut ribbon in lengths of about 5 inches each. For this project I used 4 strips of the yellow mesh, 2 black and white buffalo check, & 2 thin sheer black ribbon. I find my bows look much better if at least one ribbon choice is wired. The buffalo check is the only one that is wired in this bow.

Stack the ribbon & mesh flat. There is no need to criss cross the ribbon. It can be fluffed after it is secured in the center with jute twine.

I found this colorful jute at Michaels.

Tie the stacked ribbon in the center with the jute.

For a little color, use two colors of jute. Make multiple loops while holding the jute in the center. Make at least 8 loops on each side of the center. Tie a piece of jute in the center and use this jute to tie to center of the bow.

Fluff the bow by separating the ribbon so each piece is visible. Cut each loop of the twine in two.

Secure the bow to the top of the mesh on the broom. I wrapped the ends of the jute used to make the bow and tied around the broom handle.

Fold the bottom of each ribbon vertically & trim at an upward angle to make a dovetail. This will give your bow a more finished look. If you would like a more rustic look, don't cut the ribbon.

Next, cut another piece of the buffalo check. Fold the ribbon on both ends so there is a loop on each end. The ribbon should be long enough so that it overlaps in the back. Tie the middle with the sheer black ribbon.

Tie a piece of jute in the center and use this jute to tie to center of looped buffalo check ribbon & tie to center of bow already secured to broom. You could use hot glue to secure the bow, but I wanted it tighter & more snug to the broom.

Lastly, embellish the center of the bow with a fabric stuffed candy corn. I used a candy corn that I cut from a garland I found at Dollar General.

Sign

What's needed:

*DT Halloween sign

*White paint

*sandpaper

*orange jute twine

repurposed a sign from Dollar Tree, but you could use a wooden arrow sign from DT. In retrospect, that would have been easier, but I would not have had the witch or bat graphic. I really liked the little sign, but there was just way too much glitter.

Remove bottom part of sign

Sand the surface to remove some glitter.

Wipe clean with wet paper towel.

Paint white, except for the witch & upper bat.

Use glue to secure orange twine to edge. I used DT super glue.

Dollar Tree stick on letters on sign

Use mounting tape to secure sign to broom.

One piece of mounting tape is perfect.

Stick sign near top of broom handle.

Tie simple black sheer ribbon above sign.

Now, you have an adorable sign to greet trick-or-treaters.
